'Swan and Fledgelings, Shoreham' Artist and author Terry Scales is known for his paintings of the working Thames. A recent retrospective on this theme at the City of London Guildhall Art Gallery was the largest exhibition at that venue by a contemporary artist. In his latest exhibition at the Chapel Gallery, he takes the spectator on a visual journey. Beginning at Bankside, busy with tugs passing St. Pauls, he travels on to pause briefly at his native Greenwich, and then moves swiftly on to discover subjects in his favourite motive; the meadows and streams of Shoreham Valley. These scenes he paints equally well in both oils and watercolours, revealing in the process a romantic temperament reinforced by a strong sense of structure, a legacy of his early training at Camberwell School of Art in the post-war years. Putting aside the aesthetics of his art, Terry Scales' paintings represent the true Londoners' love affair with Kent, expressing the deep yearnings of the City dweller to lose themselves amongst the hills and hedgerows of the Darent Valley. To many whose early roots were in South London these paintings will touch a special chord. The artist will be in the Gallery on the 13th and also on the 27th of June 2004 from 11am - 5pm to sign copies of his latest books and prints. |
